1 Lyon’s Seafood & Wine Bar, Crouch End
Lyon’s Seafood & Wine Bar will open its doors in Crouch End on 11 October, focusing on exceptional, sustainable seafood from the British Isles and independent wine producers. With over 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry overseeing front of house for the likes of Hix, The Wolseley and Colbert, Anthony Lyon has set about creating a local wine bar and restaurant with flair. Head Chef Talia Prince, who has graced the kitchens of Le Gavroche and The Fat Duck, takes the helm of the kitchen, working alongside award-winning sommelier Kelvin McCabe. Lyon’s menus will be decided by the fresh catch of the day boats, with much of it cooked over charcoal. Dishes include the daily changing chilled and fire-roasted shellfish platters, whole roasted fish of the day to share, and a whole side of Var salmon with a mustard glaze, as well as a carefully selected meat dish such as Iberico pork secreto with black garlic, and vegetable-based dishes like pumpkin satay. Lyon’s ethos is to respect the whole fish and make use of as many of the underused cuts that are commonly wasted in dishes such as miso fish collars with seaweed butter, and the scallop roe taramasalata with fish skin crisps.

2 Allegra at The Stratford, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
Allegra, the much-anticipated new restaurant at The Stratford, East London’s new 42-storey, SOM-designed skyscraper with hotel, loft apartments, bars, restaurants and sky gardens, opened in the very last week of September. Headed by chef Patrick Powell, Allegra is an integral part of a unique vertical community that is the vision of Harry Handelsman, the developer behind St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse. Located on the seventh floor and overlooking the expansive Highline Sky Garden, Allegra will celebrate exuberant hospitality and inventive, seasonal cooking. Dine either a la carte, on the more informal terrace menu, or take a seat at the bar to enjoy the view over a glass of wine. The menu will include starters such as hand-dived scallops and smoked eel pithivier, and mains of suckling pig with turnip, bramley apple and mint, as well as baked celeriac with mizuna, jalapeno and celeriac ramen broth. There’s also a daily-changing seven-course tasting menu. Powell, who has worked at Dublin’s Michelin-star L’Ecrivain, Wild Honey and Chiltern Firehouse, has a passion for provenance that led Handelsman to acquire land at Pale Green Dot farm in Sussex, which will supply much of the restaurant’s ingredients.

3 Oren, Dalston
Following a string of successful pop-ups and residencies, Oded Oren will open the doors to his first restaurant, Oren, in Dalston this month. Showcasing his unique style of cooking combining Israeli and Middle Eastern influences, the 35-cover restaurant and bar will be a neighbourhood spot for sharing Oded’s distinctive take on the myriad influences he draws upon. The chef’s residencies which have included Borough Wines in Kensal Rise and Louie Louie in Camberwell, after time spent in the kitchens in Paris, California, and Tel Aviv, where he was Executive Chef of the renowned Turkiz for eight years. The menu will feature his popular Ox Cheek and Hummus, praised by Jay Rayner as ‘verging on genius’, as well as snacks and starters like grilled lamb sweetbreads and za’atar, brill tartar with raw courgette and ‘laben kishk’, and burnt aubergine with Mount Gerizim tahini. Larger dishes include his signature monkfish ‘chraime’ and hand rolled cous cous, as well as chargrilled hake kebabs. The Saturday and Sunday brunch will feature ‘Ful mudammes’ with slow-cooked British fava beans, tahini and pita, and challah French toast with seasonal compote.

4 Wilder Restaurant & Bar at Boundary London, Shoreditch 
Wilder Restaurant & Bar, a contemporary new British restaurant and bar by design guru Sir Terence Conran and Richard McLellan, former Chef at the Typing Room and Michelin-Starred Alyn William, will open at Shoreditch institution Boundary London this month. The 60-cover restaurant with bar and private dining room, will utilise the flavours from natural and considered British ingredients to create innovative, sustainable dishes. McLellan regularly visits Barton Court, Sir Terence Conran’s Georgian retreat in the English countryside, to source ingredients from the 145-acre estate, including sustainable trout and crayfish. Sample dishes include scallops with turnip, green plums and broth, venison with beets, elderberries and rye, hake with cockles, cavelo nero and gutweed, and Jerusalem artichoke with malt, chicory coffee and cobnuts. The drinks menu will incorporate some of the seasonal ingredients and botanicals that McLellan uses in his dishes, and all perfectly pair with a menu of bar snacks such as potato and smoked roe, and oyster, elderflower and skate cheeks. A wide range of gins will also be available, including a bespoke small batch Wilder gin co-created with East London Liquor Company, alongside European wines, spirits and beers.

5 The Grill at the Dorchester
Mid-October will see Tom Booton unveil his own interpretation of a modern-day British grill at The Grill at The Dorchester. Marking a significant move for the landmark luxury hotel, Booton, aged 26, will be The Grill at The Dorchester’s youngest ever head chef, and will be heading up an elite team of youthful and talented kitchen staff with Adam Nevin joining Booton as sous chef. The Grill at The Dorchester will be relaunching with a host of incredible new additions including an entirely fresh menu – set to hero British produce and showcase Booton’s unique creativity, alongside a statement Pudding Bar, which will provide six front-row seats to watch the chef’s at play. Booton, an Acorn Award 2019 winner, which recognises 30 of the industry’s brightest stars under 30, was previously Head Chef at Alyn Williams at the Westbury in Mayfair.

6 Wild by Tart, Belgravia
Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison, the duo behind bespoke catering company Tart London, alongside Tom Warren, founder of Lock Studios, will launch Wild by Tart at Eccleston Yards this October. Housed in a former power station and coal store in Eccleston Yards, on the Belgravia/Victoria borders, the new neighbourhood restaurant and bar will sit alongside the deli and coffee kiosk, which has already opened to the public, and will also house a photography studio, retail store and event space. Renowned florists Wild at Heart will also be setting up home in the restaurant’s courtyard, selling bouquets and hosting floral workshops. Lucy and Jemima will serve their signature nourishing, wholesome fare from a seasonally changing menu of Bites, Small Plates and Sweets, all designed to share. Dishes will include pulled pheasant croquettes with harissa yoghurt; clams, nduja and cider linguine; smoked tomatoes, burrata and basil oil; and sourdough pizzas from a wood burning oven. Sweets include grapefruit and basil posset, butterscotch pots and homemade ice creams. The restaurant will retain the building’s original distinctive arched roof structure, with a high glass panelled ceiling, and skylights, dating back to the 19th Century.

7 Sussex, Soho
This autumn will see a new British dining concept open on an iconic Soho restaurant site. The first West End project from the Gladwin Brothers will be a celebration of the Sussex countryside, situated on a slice of Frith Street history where Anthony Demeter’s seminal restaurant, Arbutus, was once located and, prior to that, Bruno Loubet’s first solo restaurant, Bistro Bruno. The Gladwin Brothers, Richard, Oliver and Gregory, have made a name for themselves with The Shed in Notting Hill, Rabbit on the Kings Road, and Nutbourne in Battersea. Ingredients for Sussex will be sourced directly from the Gladwins’ family farm and vineyard or local supplier’s handpicked by the three brothers to ensure the ethical commitment to sustainability is always at the core of their business. Sussex will launch in October. Sussex will mark an evolution for Chef Patron and co-founder Oliver Gladwin. No longer a sharing dish concept, he takes his inspiration from his knowledge and love of classical cooking, alongside his passion for all things rural, merging home-grown, heritage dishes with modern cooking techniques. 8 Arabica KX, King’s Cross
Borough Market favourite Arabica will open a sister site in King’s Cross this October. The new restaurant will offer an almost entirely new menu, complemented by some of the best-loved dishes from Borough – with plates inspired by recent adventures through Jordan, Lebanon and vibrant cities of Istanbul, Beirut, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The menu caters to meat-eaters, pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans. New dishes include Istanbul-style mussels with walnut tarator (Cornish mussels in tempura served with walnut sauce, spiked with Turkish red pepper paste), beef cheek borekas (puff pastry parcels with ox cheek slow-braised in red wine with roasted root vegetables), and beef and bone marrow Arayees (pitas stuffed with a blend of dry-aged short rib/chuck steak with bone marrow and whipped tahini). New vegetarian and plant-based dishes include the supercharged Hummus KX with diced sweet peppers and roasted spicy chickpeas, and fully loaded iceberg wedge salad with creamy Galotyri cheese buttermilk dressing. The new restaurant is housed in the recently opened Aga Khan Centre building, designed by world renowned Pritzker prize winning architect Fumihiko Maki, with an open-plan kitchen and bar and an alfresco terrace facing the Persian-inspired Jellicoe Gardens.

9 SABROSO at Westfield London, Shepherd’s Bush
Restaurateurs Gabriel and Jose-Luis Gonzalez, who introduced Londoners to the joys of Peruvian food with LIMA London, are to launch SABROSO, a new casual dining concept inspired by their home country of Venezuela, to the UK this month. SABROSO – South American slang for delicious – will open on 21 October in Europe’s largest shopping centre, Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush. The menu, designed by the brothers, will focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients showcasing the best of Venezuelan cuisine. Inspired by the popular arepa bars across Venezuela, the restaurant aims to recreate the vibrant flavours and exciting spirit of these bustling social hubs in the UK, revitalising London’s lunchtime scene with the option to fully customise your gluten-free arepas with a wide selection of hot and cold fillings, garnishes, and sauces packed full of flavour. 10 Hélène Darroze at The Connaught
The two Michelin-starred Hélène Darroze at The Connaught reopens on 2 October following a two-month refurbishment. The acclaimed chef’s creative vision has been realised in a bold reimagining of the dining room, kitchen and menu, with a stunning new Chef’s Table, show kitchen and dedicated Armagnac Room. Hélène lives by the philosophy that the star of any dish is not created by the chef, but by the finest produce it takes to make it. Each meal will now start with a seasonal consommé, to gently cleanse and open the palate. Dishes can be chosen based on the provenance of each key ingredient, such as pigeon (Denbighshire Wales), Cep (Scotland) or Turbot (Cornwall). Menus will also adapt more frequently to fully embrace the changes in British weather and micro-seasons. Presentation is also key, from the independent ceramicist Ema Pradere, who has been commissioned to supply the hand-thrown, consommé bowls, to Hermes’ iconic Bleu D’Ailleurs tea and coffee service. Plus, in keeping with the historic integrity of the hotel, Paris-based, interior architect Pierre Yovanovitch reinvented the main dining room using deep hues and rich textiles, lightening the historic, dark oak panelled walls and creating a modern light-filled, refined and cosseted space full of soft pinks, tans and greens.

11 Emile, Shoreditch
Damian Clisby, former chef director of Petersham Nurseries, and Nick Gibson, owner of award-winning Islington gastropub The Drapers Arms, have announced the opening of their first joint venture, Emile. Focusing on robust food and great wine with a Mediterranean influence, Emile – named for Damian’s grandfather – will take up residency at 26 Curtain Road in Shoreditch for six months from 10 October. The 40-cover restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. The daily changing menu will feature dishes such as potato and butter ravioli with porcini, venison loin with Kalibos cabbage, plum and thyme, as well as a sharing dish of Paddock Farm pork rib with anchovy and capers.Additionally, from Sunday 27 October Emile will be open every other Sunday for a series of feasting lunches, with a set menu served family-style at a single sitting. The wine list will be ‘predominantly Old World’ and ‘short, interesting and competitively priced’. Of his partnership with Damian, Nick says: ‘We’ve been chatting for a while about doing something that would combine Damian’s love of cooking with my passion for wine, and our shared love of hospitality. 12 Biff’s Jack Shack Launches at All-Vegan BrewDog Dalston 
BrewDog Dalston is to become the first, and only, fully vegan bar in its entire portfolio with the launch of Biff’s Jack Shack’s signature menu of vegan jackfruit based ‘junk’ food on 14 October, alongside an exclusively vegan-friendly line up of BrewDog beers and other drinks. Biff, which is on a mission to bring the world’s filthiest, most indulgent vegan fast food to as many people as possible, will be bringing its unique Crispy Fried Jackfruit – young green jackfruit braised in a secret spice mix and triple-dipped in golden panko – to the kitchen, as well as old favourites such as The Father Jack, The Samuel Hell Jackson and classic crispy jackfruit wingz. 13 Epic Pies, St Paul’s
Epic Pies, the high street’s first ‘British Patisserie’, will be putting a spin on quintessentially British pies, tarts and pastries when it launches on 14 October. Epic Pies was founded in 2015 by mother/son duo Daniel and Roshnara Jobsz, who combined their passions to make great sweet and savoury pies and pastries to sell at markets and festivals throughout London. This is the pair’s first bricks and mortar venture, which will champion classic pies and the fine art of patisserie. The menu will offer a rotating selection of five pies like the Ham-Hockey Puck with leeks in a cider and mustard sauce in a rich shortcrust, or the EastEnder with slowly-braised peppered steak in suet pastry and lattice shortcrust top, as well as savoury tarts like the New Yorker made with salt beef and Swiss cheese on rye pastry. You’ll also find cronuts, croffles and ‘cup-tarts’ (hybrid cupcake tarts), as well as Sweetie Pies like Lemon Meringue and Banoffee, plus a Saturday brunch menu featuring the likes of Croffle Benedict, Full English Tart and Brunch Wellington. 14 BOTTLES Chelsea
Following on from its successful Old Spitalfields Market launch last year, BOTTLES is venturing into west London with the opening of a new site on Draycott Avenue in late October. Bringing its signature Italian-inflected style to a new light and buzzy space, BOTTLES Chelsea will focus on micro-producers, natural and fine wines alongside a relaxed and authentic food offering. Unlike its sister venues which are designed with an industrial and rustic aesthetic, the new Chelsea site will be the light and airy counterpart. The glass-fronted wine bar will feature a bespoke timber wine wall where you can buy your favourite wines after indulging in dinner or a casual glass of wine. 15 No 35 Mackenzie Walk, Canary Wharf
The Darwin & Wallace collection of sustainable neighbourhood bars is expanding its portfolio with the opening of No 35 Mackenzie Walk, due to open on the waterfront in Canary Wharf this October. Just a stone’s throw from Canary Wharf tube station, and with a south-facing waterside terrace spanning the length of the bar, No 35 Mackenzie Walk will serve Monday morning coffee right through to Friday evening cocktails, as well as lazy weekend breakfasts and Sunday roasts. A bar first and foremost, No 35 Mackenzie Walk will offer seasonal cocktails made with premium spirits and freshly-picked herbs, alongside a dedicated botanicals menu with low-ABV Ketel Botanical spritzes and a large variety of gins, plus craft and draft beers from Asahi UK, Beavertown and Camden, and house wines by the glass, carafe or bottle. Conscious drinkers can expect Karma Cola, kombucha and non-alcoholic serves from Seedlip and Æcorn. A large feature bar is surrounded by feasting tables, bar-top seating and cosy sofas to lounge on, sticking with the home-from-home aesthetic with a hint of the local that has led Darwin & Wallace to win three Restaurant & Bar Design awards.

16 Ozone, Bethnal Green
Ozone, the speciality New Zealand coffee roasters, will open an all-day eatery and roastery on Emma Street, between Cambridge Heath and Bethnal Green stations, this month. With a focus on provenance, the food and drink menus celebrate local suppliers and focus on nourishing dishes created via sustainable, whole-cycle cooking, inspired by the Antipodean culture of respect and love for Papatūānuku (Earth Mother). Specialty coffee sourced direct from a variety of origins around the world will be roasted on site in a refurbished 60s Probat G90. Executive Chef and Sustainability Coordinator Joe O’Connell has created menus that change seasonally with breakfast and brunch dishes of smoked Cornish mackerel on rye with kombu chilli jam, salted cucumber and fried egg, and a Kaffir lime pancake with Crouch End honey, stone fruit, labneh and dark chocolate. Lunch includes dishes like British yellow pea falafel with hummus, beetroot kraut, shoots and savoury scroggin, and dinner will utilise similar ingredients to the daytime offering to minimise waste. Look out for dishes of house linguini with kina butter and cured yolk, or catch of the day with crab sauce and ‘Hangi’ potatoes cooked in coffee. 17 atis, Shoreditch
atis, a new restaurant and lifestyle concept, offering made-to-order salad and warm bowls, breakfast, dinner, artisanal coffee and a range of health drinks, launches in Shoreditch on 7 October. Founded by husband and wife Eleanor and Phil, atis will bring healthy and wholesome made-to-order salad bowls to City Road, the up-and-coming fringe of Old Street roundabout that features a spate of new restaurants and bars. The menu will include warm and cold salad bowl combinations, as well as a breakfast and evening dishes, all created to promote a healthy, plant-forward but flexible lifestyle, with options for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters. 18 Haymarket Wine House, St James’s
Haymarket Wine House, a new wine bar and bistro on Haymarket W1, is now open. Located next to Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Haymarket Theatre, and serving a diverse selection of wines alongside a simple French-inspired food menu, it’s an ideal pre or post theatre bar and restaurant. The simple menu offers French dishes such as steak and frites using the tenderest cuts of beef (the specialty cut is the Flat Iron, with the grain from the beef shoulder), served with a choice of Béarnaise, green peppercorn or signature House Secret Sauce for a very reasonable £10. The lunch menu features the restaurant’s signature burger – a colossal double rare-breed dried-aged burger, topped with smoked crispy pancetta, cheese, rum-flavoured BBQ sauce and lettuce – as well as vegan burger with black bean quinoa patty, vegan cheese and teriyaki glazed pineapple. Haymarket Wine House offers up 125-plus wines, ranging from full-bodied reds to crisp and fruity whites, as well as subtle blushing rosés with grape varieties from Europe and beyond. You can even opt for a Wine Paddle of three small-vineyard wine served with a trio of cheese to share. Divided across two floors, the downstairs area can be booked for parties and private functions and will also play host to wine tastings.

19 Tonkotsu, Shoreditch
Hot on the heels of its recent launch in Peckham, ramen masters Tonkotsu will open a new site in Shoreditch at the end of October. Located in a brand-new building on New Inn Yard near Shoreditch High Street, Tonkotsu Shoreditch has been designed with Moreno Massey Architecture to feature patterned tiles, polished concrete and wood accents, as well as a huge light installation made from 1,600 recycled bamboo Tonkotsu chopsticks. Each of its ramen bowls is still made with Tonkotsu’s own fresh noodles, created in-house daily using mid-century machines imported from Tokyo. Then there’s the stocks, made from scratch each day, simmering for hours to get the maximum flavour. The Shoreditch menu will feature the signature Tonkotsu ramen, a rich and creamy pork and lardo broth with thin-cut noodles and topped with roast pork belly, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, spring onions, burnt garlic oil and a seasoned egg. Other favourites include the Chilli Chicken Ramen, a chicken and sea salt broth pimped up with Tonkotsu’s addictive Eat the Bits Chili Oil, the vegan Mushroom Miso ramen, as well as juicy gyoza, chicken kara-age and Eat the Bits Chilli chicken wings.

20 Ballie Ballerson, Soho
World-famous ball pit cocktail bar Ballie Ballerson has launched a new venue in Soho – the second in addition to its original Shoreditch site, which is now closed for a refurb (due to reopen in early November). Located on Berwick Street, the new 6,000 sq ft site has two large ball pits – one in glowing neon to channel Ballie Ballerson’s established playfulness, and one with vibrant, bespoke wall murals inspired by Soho’s unique atmosphere, plus a ceiling feature where distinctive light patterns react to the music to create a more immersive experience. Ballie Ballerson’s light-hearted cocktail and food menu will also offer an exclusive Soho Sundown cocktail with rhubarb gin, lemon juice, syrup and meringue, as well as a spicy Soho-inspired pizza. Russell Sage Studio and Junction Studio – some of the hottest names in restaurant design – have taken inspiration from the 80s, 90s and the Vaporwave trend (a musical genre inspired by electronic dance music) to create an edgy adult’s playground and evoke a strong sense of nostalgia.

21 Sake Bar Takeovers in Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Rochelle Canteen Installation at the ICA, St James’s 
Rochelle Canteen at the Institute of Contemporary Arts will play host to a series of food, drink and art takeovers within Rirkrit Tiravanija’s permanently sited work, which takes the form of a sake bar, this month. The celebrated artist unveiled the installation earlier this year, inspired by the sake bars of Japan. Reflecting Tiravanija’s love of careful craft, the bar will welcome an eclectic line-up of friends, mixologists, chefs and artists for a programme of events. The first evening on 10 October will delve into the world of tea with Rare Tea Co. founder Henrietta Lovell, exploring various concoctions – including a tea-infused sake cocktail paired with Japanese-influenced snacks – that celebrate Lovell’s book, Infused – Adventures in Tea. On 16 October, Max Halley of Max’s Sandwich Shop who will take over the bar snacks menu, with a selection of his famed sandwiches paired with cocktails from Del Maguey Mezcal. In November, one of London’s top sushi masters, Jeff Tyler of Novikov will host a guided demonstration in sushi, paired with sake, before a Lillet Watercolour Masterclass accompanied by the French aperitif. Rounding the series off on December, the sake bar will get festive with a suitably seasonal Glenlivet Whiskey Evening, pairing different whiskies with cheese and chocolate.

22 Moto, Covent Garden
Moto, a unique new Japanese-inspired drinking spot set to open in Covent Garden in late October, will serve a range of independent craft sakes and Japanese spirits sourced direct from breweries. The founders spent years researching sake and visiting Japan’s finest independent and hard-to-reach sake breweries in their quest to create a unique, balanced menu with rare sakes, shochus, and a variety of other Japanese craft spirits. Sake choices will range from light and aromatic to rich and savoury, with sake tasting flights available to help you explore the range and knowledgeable staff on hand to quiz. The food menu at Moto (the name, FYI, is derived from the fermentation starter crucial in the initial stages of sake brewing) has been built around the drinks offering, with seasonal snacks, Japanese fare and flavours from the West to demonstrate how to pair different flavours with different sakes. 23 Little Bat, Islington
Little Bat, the quirky neighbourhood bar serving good food and innovative drinks in Islington and sister to revered cocktail bar Callooh Callay, has just relaunched. New Head Chef Ian McIntosh will display his signature approach to modern British cooking, serving simple, full-flavoured dishes, complemented by an unexpected garnish and created using locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Hero dishes include pappardelle with beef shin, as well as fallow venison served with pink fur potatoes and Swiss chard. Saturday brunch is also set to feature vibrant drink choices including the Bloody Mary and Espresso Martini. Continuing the excellent drinks philosophy of Callooh Callay, owner Richard Wynne has revitalised the bar menu to feature signature drinks, infused with seasonal purées. Regulars can also subscribe to the family cabinet, where you can enjoy your own 700ml bottled cocktail to share with friends for just £50 a month. From 11pm on weekends, the dining room is completely cleared and invites bar guests to party the night away with music, drinks and nibbles from the all-night snacks bar menu. On Wednesday evenings and Sunday brunchtime, you’ll be treated to the sounds of a live jazz trio or quartet, whilst Fridays and Saturdays welcome DJs with eclectic playlists.

24 Alcotraz, Covent Garden
Alcotraz – the notorious prison-themed immersive cocktail experience – is set to open a new pop-up site this month. The infamous bar behind bars will open a new Cell Block in Covent Garden as a three month pop-up running from Friday 4 October 2019, as well as a third Cell Block in Brighton, opening on Thursday 24 October. The pioneering immersive cocktail experience, created by Inventive Productions, opened on Brick Lane in 2017, generating headlines, controversy and memorable nights out. The next chapter of the story takes the concept to new heights. Taking place underneath the footsteps of Covent Garden, Alcotraz Penitentiary: Cell Block Six Eight is a secret basement speakeasy, and the stakes couldn’t be higher as visitors attempt to smuggle liquor past The Warden and into the hands of some of the prison’s longest-serving inmates who will then transform the contraband liquor into delicious cocktails.
