It might be the most wonderful time for the year, but many of us will remember December 2018 as the month that Netflix knocked it out of the park with the release of their hit horror flick Bird Box.
Based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 book of the same name, Bird Box explores the story of Malorie, (played by Sandra Bullock) a woman who is struggling to survive with her two children in a post-apocalyptic world where an undetermined force causes those who see it to die.
Now, thanks to the cinematic success of the Netflix Original, which saw close to 50 million viewers watching the film within seven days of its release, Malerman has revealed that a sequel is in the works.
Speaking to Esquire, Malerman revealed that he felt compelled to write a sequel after finding himself with a raft of burning questions at the end of the film.
“At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said, ‘I want to know what happens next!’ and she’s like, ‘Well, you know, you could make that happen’, so it really was this warm feeling,” he said.
“The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better,” he added.
The sequel, titled Malorie, takes place eight years after the original story, and picks up in a familiar, post-apocalyptic place.
“They’ve left there,” he revealed. “[It’s] similar in that they’re trying to make things work. It’s not like it opens with them in paradise.”
Malerman also took a moment to explain that the new novel will continue to explore the protagonist’s story rather than focussing on Boy and Girl, as well as the creatures causing the chaos.
“In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl,” he said.
“But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better.”
There’s no word yet on a release date for the adaptation but the novel is due for release on October 1, 2019 – and we’ll be updating this page as we hear more information.
