Forget sponges, silicone applicators and kabuki brushes. According to backstage at LFW, next season’s must-have makeup applicator is a ball of cotton wool.
The insider trick was used by makeup artist Val Garland backstage at Erdem; “I pick up the eyeshadow using the cotton wool and then press it three times onto the eyelid,” she says. “It gives a high impact finish that you don’t get with brushes.”
Whereas a makeup brush will sweep the product across the skin, ultimately spreading and softening the colour, the cotton wool ball stamps the pigment onto the skin directly without weakening the payoff.
Just be sure to use eyeshadows with highly-pigmented, vibrant shades to get the best effect.
Backstage at the show, Val used NARS new Eyeshadow Singles, £16, which feature Pigment Powder Suspension technology to maximise the impact.
“I also like how it leaves a bit of fall out, so there’s a dusting of eyeshadow on the tops of cheeks, too.”
