One Twitteruser took a still for the trailer and commented, “Is Brie Larson capable of any other facial expression other than this one? That face – talk about a piece of wood. #FirstImpressions #CaptainMarvel.” That’s a bold statement about acting ability when the actress is an Oscar winner – maybe one should get back in their box?
Some even went as far as to Photoshop smiles onto various stills of Captain Marvel. But the actress herself certainly had the last laugh, reposting a story that featured famous Marvel male characters with smiles implanted on them. Showing the ridiculousness of the situation, the uncomfortable images illustrated that when one is an action hero, one doesn’t have much time to crack a smile. It’s serious business, y’all.
Rest assured, many others leapt to Brie’s defence, with one Twitter user stating: “If you agree with the people saying Brie Larson doesn’t smile enough… your (sic) a sexist a**hole. When was the last time Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spidey, or any man smiled in a teaser photo or trailer? Their (sic) supposed to look serious.” Here, here!
Another person leaping to Brie’s defence said, “Uhh, I’ve heard SO many dudes say, ‘Brie Larson doesn’t look like she’s having ‘fun’. She’s too serious.’ Translation, ‘Pretty girls should smile more” Fellas, please be mindful that these comments reinforce gender stereotypes. Help change culture expectations.”
Captain Marvel is the first Marvel film to feature a female lead and will see Brie star alongside Gemma Chan. The film is part of Marvel’s efforts to show a cast that is fully representative of the universe we ACTUALLY live in following the success of Black Panther.
Captain Marvel is in cinemas in March 2019.
